Piper appoints new investment director to team

Piper, the leading specialist investor in consumer brands, has recruited Dan Stern to its in-house team.

With more than 10 years of experience in the consumer sector, Stern joins Piper as Investment Director. He previously spent four years in the consumer team at 3i, where he worked on the acquisition of GO Outdoors and the sale of the restaurant chain Giraffe.

An economics and management graduate from Oxford, Stern began his career in audit and consulting at Deloitte before moving into corporate finance at Dresdner Kleinwort. As well as being part of Piper’s investment team, Stern will also join the board of Justin Craig Education, the UK’s leading provider of group tuition and revision courses.

Stern joins Piper following a period of investment activity over the summer in which the company took stakes in Turtle Bay, the Caribbean restaurant group, and Orlebar Brown, the luxury menswear brand. Piper has now made four investments from its most recent £100m plus fund, which was raised in 2011.

Of his appointment, Dan Stern said: ‘I am thrilled to have joined the Piper team. I am passionate about the consumer sector and have joined a true specialist. The firm’s mix of skills and backgrounds make it genuinely differentiated and a very exciting opportunity for me.’

Chris Curry, managing partner at Piper, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Dan to Piper. His knowledge and hands-on experience of the consumer sector will be a great asset to us, our portfolio companies and our future partners.’
